  • Historical Note: Barnard was a photographer in the Topographical Branch of the Department of Engineers, Army of the Cumberland, United States Army. He traveled to Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga in 1864. Poe and Babcock were West Point graduates and engineers. Poe worked under Gen. Ambrose Burnside in Knoxville, Tennessee, to fortify the city after it was occupied by Federal troops in September 1863. Babcock served as an aide to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Barnard photographed them at Fort Sanders on March 21, 1864.
