  • Historical Note: Note:Alexander Simplot served as a "special artist" for Harper's Weekly. He arrived with federal naval commander Andrew Foote's fleet at Fort Henry in 1862. This drawing, which emphasizes the closeness of the fort to the river, may have been created to illustrate the placement of the fort in an area prone to flooding, to record the configuration of the Confederate fortification, and to help estimate the quantity of war materiel found at the site.
